As SOBANS, we recognize the importance of giving back not only to our alma mater but also to the communities in which we live. SOBA California, one of the newer chapters of SOBA America, is committed to creating a legacy of volunteerism as they continue to build their brand in California. Their mission is to make a meaningful impact both within their community and beyond.
On August 10th, 2024, SOBA California took a significant step in this direction by participating in a volunteer activity at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. This esteemed organization has been mobilizing resources to fight hunger in the Los Angeles community since 1973. With the help of hundreds of thousands of volunteers each year, the Food Bank has distributed more than 1.9 billion pounds of food and serves over 900,000 people monthly.
From 9 AM to 1 PM, members of SOBA California joined other volunteers at the City of Industry location to assemble food items for distribution. The SOBA California team included Martin Caspa (Class of 1970), Donald Betah (Class of 1986), Tony Mbuagbaw (Class of 1988), Frank Essombe (Class of 1989), and Marcel Atashima (Class of 1996). It was a rewarding experience, not just for the impact they made but also for the camaraderie they shared as they worked together.
A special mention goes to Marcel Atashima, who had recently moved to California and was meeting several chapter members for the first time. Despite being new to the area, Marcel’s enthusiasm and commitment were evident as he quickly became a valued member of the team. In addition to their volunteer work, the chapter members had the opportunity to connect with members of other organizations, fostering new friendships and expanding their network.
SOBA California is proud to support their community through initiatives like this, and they plan to make this volunteer activity at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank an annual event. This effort is perfectly aligned with SOBA America’s broader vision and mission of giving back to our communities, not only during our annual community service activities at conventions but also locally through our chapters all year round.
As we continue to grow and strengthen our chapters, let us take inspiration from SOBA California’s dedication to service and strive to make a positive difference in our communities wherever we are
